My question: Do people ever write shell scripts without a shebang line

Yes, *however* you can't make them directly executable. i.e. to run them you must explicitly ask the shell to run them. Most shell scripts, therefore, do have a shell bang.

I'm not asking the shell to run them. I getting NSTask to do it.

Indeed. The point is that the shell bang needs to be in the script for that to work.

You can (and indeed people do) write scripts without the shell bang, but you can only run them by explicitly invoking them using the shell.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
