NSScroller icon / split view

In XCode, for example, one is able to create a splitview by clicking on a control element which is placed
at the top of the vertical scroll bar ("click to split the editor view"). I'd appreciate pointers to example code or hints for
implementing such a control. I'm guessing that this requires placing an icon or NSCell 'above' a NSScroller drawn to be
a few pixels less than the size of the view, but I couldn't find a concrete example to confirm this idea.

thanks,

Nick
