.dxf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AutoCAD_DXF is the de-facto standard for 2D and 3D CAD vector drawing exchange. You will have a hard time finding CAD software that doesn't at least read .dxf, and most will write it too.
.3ds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Studio_Max is the de-facto standard for 3D scene and model exchange and is used by 3D Studio Max, Maya, Okino, IntelliCAD, SolidWorks, Blender, etc.

I don't know of any applications that accept and work with .3ds
or .dxf. Do you? I've not found a good cross-platform vector graphics
format. SVG looks the most promising of all those I've looked at.
