Is there a good example of how to do custom MenuItemCell drawing to override the look of a NSPopupButton's menu.

MenuItemCell etc. are hold-overs from NeXT. They are currently unused as of OS X 10.4. You'll have to use Carbon Menu Manager APIs to draw custom menu items.
