NSConnection timeouts

Hi,

I currently have a problem in my program, i have begun learning about networking and have come across a annoying bug.

How can i make my program detect if a connection was made, or make it so it doesnt freeze up the whole application waiting for it to fail.

PS. Where is a good place to learn about network encryption for the data i send _______________________________________________
