And again, it's not a question of "it's too hard", it's a question
of where would time best be spent. Is it better to spend a month
or two of writer effort adding boilerplate text to every method
definition to explain something that should be readily apparent by
simple application of a fundamental rule (does the method name
begin with “alloc” or “new” or contain “copy”), or is it better to
write new guides and tutorials or augment existing ones?

I don't want to prolong this thread, but to end it on a positive
note, let me say a big thank you to mmalc and Uli and Alastair and j
o a r and all the others (what a long list of names that would be!)
who so generously insure that Cocoa developers can get their
questions answered. When I took up Cocoa a few years ago, I had no
background in C (I was mostly systems admin and SQL). With the help
of this list, Aaron's book, cocoabuilder.com, and the Apple docs,
I've never run into a problem that has me completely stumped. In fact
I've let some of my annual tech support incidents lapse because I
didn't have a question to ask!
The advice offered here to newbies is golden. Every time I read one
of Douglas Davidson's responses I marvel at his patient, cogent
explanations of the Cocoa text system. What a treasure!
I like to think that for every newcomer who gets lost and complains
about the documentation, there are dozens like me who read it,
understand it, and appreciate it.
