Binary Data Format for NSTextView

Could someone tell me what the format is of the data managed via a 'data' binding for an NSTextView supporting rich text that is bound to a Core Data binary attribute?

I'd like to retrieve that attributed text in order to scan the text and using valueForKey returns something that does not look like the expected NSTextStorage.
