Is this a DMG you have control over? That is, one you distribute your application in, or one your application creates?

In those cases, I'm thinking a low-tech solution might be best.
Perhaps a hidden file like ".DMG" stored in the same directory as your
application bundle. If a user copied your applicaton somewhere else
then this file would be missing.
