Hi, I have a simple helper app that allows my main application to self-update. The helper app simply copies the updated application into the "Applications" folder. All works fine, as long as the user has admin privileges...

Are you aware that the Sparkle framework is available for this? It only takes you about half an hour to implement as it features a well- written manual. Of course that does not give you the satisfaction of doing it own your own.
