Kevin,

Do you mean something like the following?

// Assume path and shadow exist
[shadow set];
[[NSColor clearColor] set];
[path stroke];

That would do absolutely nothing, well, at least, nothing shows up
on-screen, not even the shadow. It's a bummer that is doesn't work but
that's the sad truth.
