Binding NSMenuItem state

Is there some way that I can use the bindings panel in Interface Builder to bind an NSMenuItem's state?

I have a checkbox control in my GUI. When I check the box I want a menu item's state to be NSOnState (checked). Likewise, if the user selects the menu item its state should be inverted the check box should reflect the change in state. My end goal is to be able to use Shared User Defaults and bindings within my code to remember which table columns the user has chosen to display.

I searched the archives and found this response, but it doesn't quite get me there.
