 First, thanks to all who've responded.

Bill & Steve: Very helpful; I'll give your approaches a try.

Jay & B.J.: I hadn't thought to pre-seed random with a fixed seed.
I'll have to remember that next time "random" is appealing but too
"random". :-)

Arri: Good point. I'll have to include a few presets like "high
contrast", etc. Equal Opportunity Employment and all, best to make the
tools as universally accessible as possible. :-)

Hal & Chris: I've actually heard of both of these, but I can't seem to
find any code that makes use of either. If you know of any examples,
I'd be most appreciative.
