Why does that happen and what should I do to prevent it?

My guess is that it has to do with the popup switching from normal to small. If you don't cycle through the small icons state, what happens?

If I don't cycle through the small icons state, the popup button stays as it should. When I only switch between large and small icons the problem occur.
