The menu item is connected to -[NSApplication orderFrontCharacterPalette:] method.

However, you shouldn't have to call it manually since all Cocoa apps with "Edit" menu should get the menu item.

If there are some applications that're not showing the item, please file a bug.

Can someone point me to documentation describing the Character Palette, how it might be summoned programmatically. We seem to get the Special Characters... menu item for free in document applications. I'm investigating using the Character Palette in an existing non-document based application.
