1. is using Core Data a good approach for this?

Not until you've gained more experience with Cocoa:

Admittedly, my experience with Cocoa is limited. However, I do understand KVC, KVO, and bindings, and I have written small little Cocoa apps in the past. I've also gone through the available tutorials regarding Core Data and bindings, and it's all pretty simple, at least conceptually. I'm not as green as it might seem, despite my recent question about id and root classes. Besides, I'm not trying to write an application to control the space shuttle, so it's unlikely that I will need an expert-level understanding of any part of Cocoa to write the app I have in mind.
