[self setNeedsDisplay:YES] is being called by a method in your custom
view?
and you haven't created your own instance variable called self? or
overridden setNeedsDisplay:?

Is that a typo, or is your method really called drawRec? It
should be drawRect:, with a "t" and a colon, and should take an
NSRect argument. See the documentation for the method.
