Ultimately though you have to send data to the service. (a printer for example) Does this data sending fall outside the purview of Bonjour? I took a look at the Picture Sharing and Picture Sharing Browser example apps and they seem to transmitting picture data...

Look a bit closer; sockets are being set up. The sample also makes use of NSFileHandle APIs such as acceptConnectionInBackgroundAndNotify.
