For the archives:

Most of the problems I was having were due to sloppiness about view vs. model, treating the view as part of the model. But I did find Scott Stevenson's "intro to bindings" at CocoaDevCentral gave me a hint about using a Controller Alias to talk to the NSWindowController's document. http://cocoadevcentral.com/articles/000080.php
