Implementing serial license scheme

I've implemented a license scheme in a software of mine using
AquaticPrime framework. However it's not so secure (yes there is not
any secure way but AP it's a bit complicated with licenses file
instead of a simple serial number) so I'm searching for another way.
What's the common way to implement a email+license key scheme? I've
searched on cocoabuilder but there are lot of confusing posts.
What's the most common used way in shareware product as like
TextMate...graphiconverter etc?
