Which books do you have? The "Big Purple Book" (Cocoa Programming by Anguish, Buck, Yacktman) gives you everything you need.

There's also the documentation, which is the first place you should've checked. The Cocoa Drawing Guide is free and demonstrates the first two topics quite nicely.

Getting a JPEG from an NSImage is less straightforward but it's been discussed in various places. The coocadev.com wiki is a great place to find things like this:

I've got three books on Cocoa but none of them have information that
helps what I'm trying to do with pictures. I know this must be trivial
and if there's a good starting tutorial someplace, that'll be all I
need.

What I'm trying to do is create a desktop sized black ground .jpg that
has
downloaded pictures of my family sprinked in it. That's pretty much it

1) Create a picture/object/?? that is X-wide, Y-high, make it all back
2) Add a picture (or two or three) somewhere in the mix
3) This 'composite' as a .jpg

Like I said, a simple turtorial on how to create a .jpg and how to
read/load
pictures from files would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Steven
