Apologies for this post. At its simplest all one need do is:

- (IBAction) addNode:(id)sender
{
       NSManagedObjectContext    *context = [self managedObjectContext];

       Node  *node = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:
@"Node" inManagedObjectContext: context];
}

And just wire it up in IB.

Just wasn't thinking clearly.
