But - I think for historical reasons - the mouse location is (in most cases) rounded to integer values.

But mouse coordinates are floats, so they are not always on a pixel.

Yes, that's the reason why I wrote "in most cases".
E.g. when I use the zooming feature of Mac OS X (available through "Universal Access" in the System Preferences), I get fractions for the mouse coordinates. Most probably the upcoming resolution independency will also produce fractions for the mouse coordinates.
