Well, I finally fixed it (according to preliminary testing), simply by recreating the nib file from scratch again. The difference with the first time I did this is that 1 I installed a fresh copy of the developer tools, and 2 I copied almost nothing from the original nib file to the replacement copy, instead recreating most objects totally afresh.

So it looks like some object(s) in the nib file had become corrupted. Either way, I'm glad this appears to have been resolved.
