The weird part is that iPhoto's library file doesn't have an extension. I don't mind adding an extension to my file, but I do wonder how Apple did it though.

In the Properties tab of the inspector for you application target in xcode, you can specify document types which belong to you application. You can create an entry for the file extension of your package and subsequently any directories with that extension will be treated as packages.
