Sending events to other applications

I'm sure this *has* to be faq (so I apologize in advance) but I can't
seem to find anything other than what I describe below.

I would like to "drive/control" an app that I didn't write, e.g. send
mouse events, keyboard events, etc.

I've found CGPostMouseEvent(), CGPostKeyboardEvent(), et. al., but I
was wondering if these was a more straightforward way to accomplish
the task?
And pretty-please don't recommend AppleScript...

BTW, this app is for my own personal use - I'm not trying to do
anything evil here. :)
