Getting Search into the toolbar

I'm trying to make a user interface similar to mail, tri-panel, sources, list & detail. Most of that is fine, but there are a couple of points I'm sticking on.

The major one at the moment is getting a search field in the area of the window occupied by the toolbar. IB3 doesn't allow me to do this directly, so I'm looking for ideas.

Do I have to make a custom NSToolbarItem to do this, and embed the search in there?

The other one is the buttons at the bottom of the sources list, but I can approximate that for now. This toolbar one rather mucks up the whole layout.
