run application in userspace without login

hello list,

i know you can "replace the Finder" simply by altering the defaults for loginwindow (finder = /path/to/alternativefinder.app).
but is there a way to tell loginwindow to ONLY start that 'alternative' application and nothing else (such as SystemUIServer etc..)?

or otherwise, is there a way to run my application in the users' context without requiring that user to login (or use auto-login)?
i know this can be done through launchd, but then the app. can't connect to the windowserver unless it runs as root (or the windowserver is running as that user??)

thanks,
arri
