There was once (Tiger and before) a handy private function: - (id) _highlightColorForCell:(NSCell *)cell; that enabled subclassers to disable this feature.

You should use the offical method instead:

- (NSColor *)highlightColorWithFrame:(NSRect)cellFrame inView:(NSView *)controlView

overwritten in your Cell's subclass.
