Recreating Finder launch animation

I would like to have the same effect finder does when opening a file or application to provide some feedback to the user. However I have no idea where to start to do this type of animation. Which is basically an image growing and fading away.

Should i be getting into Core Animation, or is that an overkill?

How can I do stuff like that? Some directions would be nice.
