NSTextFieldCell subclass problem

I'm seeing a weird problem in a subclass of NSTextFieldCell. When i start an edit, the field does not contains any info and it does not have a focus ring around it. When i dismiss the field, it sends the delegate but the object it sends is empty. Ive uploaded an image to show the problem:

if anyone has any ideas what might be going on, id be very grateful.
