Well ok, let me rephrase that - I'm doing nothing *else* on my main
thread except executing the two update methods when the worker thread
asks the main thread to perform them.

That should indeed be enough.
I think that you need to either post more code, or preferably a sample
project that exhibits this problem, for us to be able to help you figure
out what's wrong.
