Problems with Split Views?

I am quite new to Cocoa and have been experimenting with split views
in Interface Builder. It's basically 3 vertical splits with each end
view also split in half horizontally. It seems to do more or less what
I want. However looking around for example projects I get the
impression that the split views are somehow buggy and I'm better off
using a third party split view such as RBSplitView. Can someone
explain what sort of problems - if any - I'm likely to encounter using
the regular split view?
What I need is to have 3 vertical splits with each end view also split
(horizontally). These end views should not resize as the window is
resized - just the center view. I know in IB you don't seem to be able
to prevent a split from resizing when its parent is resized (or am I
wrong here?) but I presume that wouldn't be a problem with some code.
