Modal popup from command line tool or daemon?

Hi

I'm new to Cocoa and I'm trying to figure out how to create a simple popup which can be displayed from a command line tool or a background process. Ideally it would be something like NSAlert plus a text input field. I've been reading Apple's docs on windows, documents and the various controllers, and playing around with Interface Builder, but I think I'm missing something basic. Any pointers on where to begin would be appreciated.

Rod
