The "fake temporary item" solution actually works pretty well. It's the last thing I'd call elegant, but here's how you can blink a menu title in Cocoa.

Unfortunately that solution (and any of the other horrible strategies available) trigger VoiceOver for the menu item. Anyone know a way to activate that for the folks using Accessibility options?
