I'm using the following to allow the user to run my NSPersistentDoc

sane method??

For that you don't want applicationShouldOpenUntitledFile. What you want is simply to open the document when the app has finished launching. When the app quits, if there's a document open you save the file URL in preferences. When the app finishes launching, just check the preference for whether you should open the previous document and open the last document URL if there is one.
