My question is: Is there a better way to display what is essentially the same as the menu bar clock?

I think only you can really answer that - after all you are the one making the clock app. What's "better" for you? Big digital 7-segment display perhaps? Maybe in binary with simulated LEDs like those Think Geek clocks?

Maybe I misunderstood the question...

Reminds me though of one of my first ever apps - a big digital clock on the C64. Each digit was a double-sized sprite. Couldn't miss that sucker ;-)

cheers, Graham
