could you stick a useless, firing in a million years, timer in it?

how willl you eventually make it shut down even if you do do that, or will it just hang out there until the application terminates?

I want to have a separate thread in my app which does time consuming things. I want to assign tasks to this thread using performSelector:onThread.

Now you can't have a runloop with no input sources, or it exits immediately. So how do I start a thread with a runloop that does nothing except patiently wait for performSelector:onThread: calls?
