Maybe not.
I was using this assertion (written some time ago in ignorance) and
wasted an afternoon tracking down the fact that it didn't work.
Maybe the only solution is to set up an exception handler.

Untrue. Another solution - and I'd suggest a superior one even if it takes more work up front - is to identify and correct the design flaw that ends up giving you collections of unknown mutability.
