CLLocation* venueLocation = [[CLLocation alloc] initWithLatitude: venue.latitude longitude:venue.longditude];
CLLocationDistance distance = [venueLocation getDistanceFrom:currentLocation];

Is distance in metres/miles/km? How do I display it on screen in a platform independent way?

From the documentation of -getDistanceFrom:
"Returns the distance (in meters) from the receiver’s coordinate to the coordinate of the specified location."

Thanks Duncan! Why do people always seem to be able to find stuff in the documentation. When I "Option + Mouse double click" on "CLLocationDistance" Xcode only shows me this!

    CLLocationDistance
    A distance measurement from an existing location.

    typedef double CLLocationDistance;
    Availability
    Available in iPhone OS 2.0 and later.
    Declared In
    CLLocation.h
