To answer the original question, if you're interested in writing something
using C, you want to study up on Apple's Accessibility and Quartz Event
Services APIs. Both are standard C APIs, and it's straightforward to use
them in a Cocoa application.

AppleScript's GUI Scripting technology uses the Accessibility API under the
hood.
