Yes, it was the effect I was looking for. Where is this sample? Does the effect work in NSTextField too?

If you're just looking for the effect, not the functionality, you can use a combination of tracking rects (or NSTrackingArea on 10.5) and then draw an overlay window. There's sample code for the overlay window portion.
