I was wondering what kind of view object the finder/itunes sidebar is?

In Leopard, this is a standard NSOutlineView or NSTableView with the "Highlight: Source List" option selected. To achieve the icons in each row, search for "ImageAndTextCell", for which there are a thousand examples.

There are recent threads on this list that discuss how to achieve the more polished elements that iTunes and Finder use (the drop-caps headers, etc.
