Correct way to check for active/available internet connection?

Hello all,
Is there a (hopefully quick and easy) correct/standard way to check for an active/available internet connection ?
I would like to simply run such a check before calling other methods.
My app is basically a wrapper for a command line tool, so the tool itself is what will send any requests out. I just want to check beforehand. If there is no internet connection available, then the buttons that call the tool's requests will be grayed out.
