I don't know how Leopard implements the Help search item, but the
"StarMenu" sample code came to mind. It seems it's been removed from /
Developer/Examples/ in Leopard; perhaps there's a reason for this?
Anyway, it's here: <http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/StarMenu/>
The Carbon HIView docs have some information, too: <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/HIViewDoc/HIView_tasks/chapter_3_section_12.html

Presumably you've already seen this: <http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/MenuItemView/

I just tried moving the button to the top of its view, and there are
still a few pixels of border.
If you do have to use Carbon for this, you might be able to use some
code from <http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/HIView-NSView/> to
still be able to use an NSView up there.
