NSTextFields & other input controls in CALayer

I've been working in a little app which is laced with CA effects bit essentially is a simple list manager.
There's a few NSTextField controls and other input controls in a view which flips, fades etc and it seems that there's a fundamental issue in my text fields are accepting mouse events (like clicks and selections etc) but never show a cursor or accept keyboard input... i.e. I can't type any text in them.

Is this a restriction of CALayers? I couldn't find anything on the web about this, so I'm pretty lost on what to do.

Cheers
