CALayer with checkered background like Photoshop's

Hello

I'm just beginning with Core Animation so sorry if this is a noob question. I searched but couldn't find anything relevant here or on google.

Is it possible to use a CICheckerboardGenerator filter to fill the entire background of a CALayer so that I get a similar effect to that which Photoshop has when the content is transparent?
I've tried a lot of things but the filters only seem to want to work on the content.

Any ideas? Is there another way to do this?

Thanks
