That was it! I had forgotten to retain numbers. What confused me was that I was getting those bogus entries like NSRectSet. But the "target does not respond to this message selector" should have tipped me off that I was sending a message to nil. Thanks so much.

You weren't sending a message to nil. Messages to nil do nothing.

What probably happened is that the memory was deallocated and an NSRectSet was allocated at the exact same location. You won't see this problem with Garbage Collection so use that if you can. Otherwise you can debug these kinds of problems using zombies.
