Actually, "if ([myString length] == 0)" is probably better, but just
IMHO... :)

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem, but how about ...
if ([myString isEqualToString:@""])
{
// Record silence into file ...
} else {
// Send string to speech synthesizer
}
