What is the proceedure to "reset the serial number"? I've come across
a couple of eMacs that have had their motherboards/logic boards
replaced due to a faulty batch of capacitors causing the infamous
"melting screen" issue. None of them had serial numbers when I
looked at them using Apple System Profiler and when I spoke to the
tech that Apple sent out, he said that this was "normal" for
replacement logic boards. If there is a procedure to "reset the
serial number" that he's supposed to have done, then he's not doing
his job right, not to mention it's now a pain in the ass to keep
track of them sans serial numbers that can be seen via ARD.

Almost the only time that a machine won't report that it has a
serial number is after the logic board has been replaced and some
technician forgot to reset the serial number.

What macs store their serial number on disk instead of on the
logic board? Where did you find this information?

Some Macs don't have a serial number on the logic board, but
rather just
stored on the disk. In that case, just reformatting or replacing
the hard
disk will wipe the serial number. You should read this:
