I'm a cocoa newbie, so I may be missing something obvious here: I'd
like to get a list of open windows for all currently running
applications.

Nothing personal, but people seem to ask this question here about once a week ... and I just have to ask "why"? What kind of application are you working on? I can't think of a compelling usage for this, other than writing some kind of window-management utility (or malware...)

I have a couple of screen measurement tools for which I could have used those APIs had I ever been able to make any sense of them. For instance, in the GuideLines app, I would like to be able to query the top-most window under the cursor for its content view and sub-views so as to align the guides to a document's borders.

And, yes, perusing a bunch of 'private' APIs a couple of years
ago, I wondered about the potential for malicious or mischievous
apps. The CGWindowListCopyWindowInfo mentioned later sounds
like what I could use, and it's read-only . . .

    Cheers,
        ........ Henry
